So this talk was actually inspired by a yoga class that I was taking, so in full disclosure that’s where it came from, but my hope is that you will find some value in it and the intention of it is to help you gain a deeper understanding on why I believe that this generation of the millennials, so anybody born 1980 to the year 2000, and I’ll even extend that to the ones born after 2000, are different than and are experiencing the human experience in a way that no other generation before them ever has. So in that class the teacher was talking about how in this fast, rapid, moving world, how important it is to be able to pause, slow down, and to go back to the way things used to be before technology, before all these advances to make our lives faster and faster and faster. And, all of a sudden, something clicked and I started to think of something. I started to think there’s a generation of people that have no idea and have no point of reference to the way things used to be. The way things are right now is the only way they know and the only way it’s ever been.

What is drug addiction? Drug addiction is a serious disease...

What is drug addiction?
Drug addiction is a serious disease characterized by uncontrollable drug seeking and use despite the consequences. The changes in the brain caused by addiction lead to harmful behaviors seen in people who abuse drugs. Drug addiction is also a relapse disease, meaning that sometimes users return to drug use after an attempt to stop.
Addiction begins with the act of taking drugs. Over time, the ability to choose not to do so becomes compromised. Obtaining and using the drug becomes uncontrollable. The compulsive drug-seeking is mostly due to the effects of long-term drug exposure on brain function.

Because prescription painkillers are becoming harder to obtain and the cost is increasing, many people who abuse opiates are turning to heroin as a cheaper and stronger alternative. Nearly half of heroin users began first by abusing prescription opiates. The CDC reports that in the past 10 years heroin abuse has doubled for Americans aged 18-25. 8,200 people died from a heroin overdose in 2013, which is almost four times the amount of overdose deaths in 2002.

Teen OxyContin Use
Teenagers are especially susceptible to OxyContin abuse because the drug is often readily available in one’s own home or the homes of friends. It is common for abuse to begin by taking pills that were legitimately prescribed to someone the user knows. Teens sometimes incorrectly assume that because a doctor prescribed the drug to one person that it is safe for another to consume. This leads to high numbers of teens abusing prescription painkillers like Oxycontin. Here are some numbers regarding adolescent use of prescription opioids according to American Society of Addiction Medicine:
-Each day, 2,500 adolescents abuse prescription opioids for the first time
-1 in 30 high school seniors have abused OxyContin

Oxycontin is the branded formula of oxycodone. It is given to people to manage moderate to severe pain. When used correctly, it is usually safe and effective. When abused, oxycontin can be deadly.
It is estimated that around 2 million people in the United States are addicted to or abuse opioid painkillers like oxycontin, and about 50 painkiller-involved deaths occur every day. Many opioid abusers turn to heroin when they’re unable to get opiod pain killers because heroin provides a similar high, it’s less expensive, and easier to get. One study shows that people addicted to opioid painkillers were 19 times more likely to start abusing heroin in the year prior to the study.

Making the initial decision to get help is just the beginning....

Making the initial decision to get help is just the beginning. Finding a treatment center that best fits your need is the next step. Here are a few factors to consider if you’re considering going to an outpatient drug rehab.
What type of addictions does the rehab facility have experience with?
Kicking addiction problems is hard. So, in order to make the most of your treatment experience, we suggest going to a facility that has experience in the type of addiction you’re dealing with.
The reason why it’s important to go with an outpatient rehab facility that has experience with your addiction is that every drug is different. Some drugs have withdrawals and symptoms that are uncomfortable but easily managed while withdrawal from other drugs can be extreme, unique, and require specialized knowledge and treatment. Going with a rehab that has experience with your addiction will give you the best chance of success.
Factors that should be considered but are not treatment related are:
-Distance
-Flexibility
-Support
-Cost
Considering these factors when choosing an outpatient drug rehab will increase your chances of getting the best possible care. http://ift.tt/2f9pGsO

Medications, and how they’re used in drug addiction...

Medications, and how they’re used in drug addiction treatment.
Medications can manage withdrawal symptoms, prevent relapse, and treat co-occurring conditions.
Medications help patients deal with withdrawal symptoms during detox. A study done on treatment facilities found that medications were used almost 80 percent of the time during detox (SAMHSA, 2014).
Medications can help patients with relapse prevention. Medications do this by helping re-establishing normal brain function and decrease cravings. Medications are available for treatment of opioid (heroin, prescription pain relievers), tobacco (nicotine), and alcohol addiction. Scientists are developing other medications to treat stimulant (cocaine, methamphetamine) and cannabis (marijuana) addiction. People who use more than one drug, which is very common, need treatment for all of the substances they use.
Opioids: Methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone are used to treat opioid addiction. Methadone and buprenorphine act on the same receptors that heroin and morphine do, which helps with withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Naltrexone blocks opioid by blocking off the receptor sites in the brain. Naltrexone should only be used by people who have already detoxed off drugs. Medications help patients reduce drug use and helps them become more open to behavioral treatments.
Alcohol: Only three medications have been FDA approved for treating alcohol addiction.
Naltrexone helps block receptors that are involved with the rewarding effects of drinking.
Acamprosate is for severe addiction to alcohol and helps relieve long-lasting withdrawal symptoms like: anxiety, insomnia, restlessness and dysphoria.
Disulfiram disrupts the breakdown of alcohol. Acetaldehyde builds up in the body, leading to unpleasant reactions that include flushing (warmth and redness in the face), nausea, and irregular heartbeat if the patient drinks alcohol. Compliance (taking the drug as prescribed) can be a problem, but it may help patients who are highly motivated to quit drinking. (at Orange County Recovery Services)

Paying for drug rehab with Medicaid and Medicare.
Medicaid and Medicare can help pay for detox, addiction medications, and inpatient treatment centers.
What are Medicaid and Medicare?
Medicaid and Medicare are state-funded health insurance plans. These insurance plans can provide free or low-cost drug and alcohol addiction treatment. Each plan has different stipulations for eligibility.
Medicare or Medicaid could cover all of your addiction treatment costs.
Rules and eligibility are different for every state, and rules change annually. So, if you were turned down in the past, you may be eligible now.

Addiction treatment costs vary from rehab to rehab. Most rehabs cost thousands of dollars per day, but some are free. There are treatment centers that will work with your budget. If you know what resources to use, rehab can be accessible to anyone.
Financial aid and Insurance
One of the most common ways people pay for addiction treatment is with insurance. Depending on the type of insurance you have the amount it will cover will vary. Some PPO insurance policies pay for just about everything involved in addiction treatment.
Don’t worry if you don’t have insurance. There are still many ways to access addiction treatment. Most states have free or low-income rehab centers. One of the best options is to look for rehabs that with finance options. Financing is better because free rehabs usually have long wait lists and limited funding.

What is a drug relapse? A drug relapse is the recurrence of drug...

What is a drug relapse?
A drug relapse is the recurrence of drug abuse from someone who is going through or has gone through a recovery program. Addiction is a chronic disease that is subject to periods of relapse. Usually relapses happen when the person being treated is exposed to certain triggers that increase their risk of returning to substance abuse.
While relapses are common, they are not inevitable. Following steps of drug relapse prevention and taking action early on can minimize the intensity of a relapse period and can reduce your risk for further hardship from substance abuse.
Relapse cycle
Relapses are often followed by a downward spiral into compulsive behavior and addiction. Since relapses don’t occur suddenly, there are warning signs and other identifiable factors that typically appear early on.
Signs of a drug relapse can be broken down into three stages
-Emotional relapse
-Mental relapse
-Physical relapse

Things to consider when choosing a sober living -Your situation....

Things to consider when choosing a sober living
-Your situation. Whether you’re a professional, single parent, college student, or anyone else, you’ll want to find a sober living that meets your needs. For example, a single parent might want to choose a sober living that will allow them to have their child stay with them, and a college student might opt for a college sponsored sober living.
-Reputation of the sober living is huge. Have they been in business for long? What has the experience been for other people who have lived there? Ask to talk to current residents and past residents if possible. If the facility will not allow you to talk to existing tenants than be wary.
-Location is an important thing to consider when choosing a sober living. If you don’t have reliable transportation you might want to consider living close to your job, favorite 12-step meeting, or outpatient treatment facility if you’re attending one. You’ll also want to consider if the sober living is located in a safe neighborhood.
-Considering the size of the sober living is important. If you’re a social person you might want to consider a larger sober living, and if you aren’t a social person you might want to consider a smaller, more private sober living.
-What are the staff and owners like? Do they have experience running a sober living? How long have they worked in the recovery field? Do they have any professional certifications, applicable degrees, or licenses that indicate they are knowledgeable in the areas of addiction treatment? All these are important questions to ask when selecting a sober living. There is very little regulation regarding sober livings and quality ranges drastically.
-What are the house rules? How often is drug testing? People serious about getting sober might choose a sober living that does random drug testing and tests when there has been suspicion of drug use. Are meetings required? If so, what kind of meetings are required and how often are they? A lot of sober livings choose to have a very structured schedule for their residence. The schedule usually involves wake up time, scheduled activities, daily meetings and a curfew. (at Orange County Recovery Services)

What happens in rehab? Every rehab program is different, but...

What happens in rehab?
Every rehab program is different, but most follow a similar framework of therapies. In most cases detox is required and is followed up by residential inpatient treatment. After detox and residential treatment the individual will be put into an outpatient program and live in a structured sober living environment, also known as a sober living.
Detox usually takes 7-14 days depending on the substance[s] the individual is detoxing from. Once out of detox the individual goes into residential inpatient treatment where they have 24/7 support and daily drug addiction therapy. Once residential inpatient treatment is completed the individual getting treatment will usually move into a sober living. While living in the sober living they will attend outpatient therapy until their drug counselor deems them fit to leave.

Options for the treatment of substance abuse
There are more options for the treatment of substance abuse than ever before. In this article we’ll be going over a few options for substance abuse treatment. Keep in mind these are only a few options of the many that are out there. Please contact us to get more information
-Long-term residential treatment
These types of programs usually last between 6 and 12 months. They are highly structured, and provide care 24 hours a day.
Long-term residential treatment programs focus on helping the individual develop social skills, accountability, and skills needed to live a life free of addiction.
-Short-term residential treatment
Short-term residential programs usually last between 3 to 6 weeks. Once the short-term treatment is complete it’s followed up by outpatient therapy and support groups like AA/NA. Just like long-term residential treatment the goals are similar and there is 24/7 care.
-Outpatient treatment programs
There are many types of outpatient treatment programs. Outpatient treatment programs vary in length and intensity. In most cases, outpatient treatment follows residential treatment, but this is not always the case. Depending on the severity of the individual’s addiction they may opt for outpatient therapy so they can keep working or going to school, and keep up with daily responsibilities.
-Individualized drug counseling
Individualized drug counseling involves one-on-one therapy sessions with a licensed drug counselor. These therapy sessions focus on sobriety, abstaining from substance abuse, coping strategies, and equipping the individual with tools to prevent relapse.
-Group counseling
Group counseling capitalizes on social reinforcement from peer discussions. Learning how other people have overcome their substance abuse issues often helps the individual getting treatment overcome his own problems. (at Orange County Recovery Services)

What to do after rehab is an important question to ask. What you...

What to do after rehab is an important question to ask. What you do after rehab has a direct effect on your success staying sober. It’s easy to fall back into old habits and relapse. Here are some tips and strategies you can use to continue your recovery and stay sober.
Follow a plan
Most rehabs create a discharge plan for patients. The plan includes resources like: support groups, health care facilities and information on addiction recovery. It’s extremely important to have a plan and stick to it. Relapses are common, and it’s been proven having a plan gives you a better chance at staying sober!
Consider the living situation
Does the patient’s living situation make it easy for them to remain sober? Does the patient live with people who use drugs and or alcohol? Is the patient strong enough to remain sober around people who aren’t? All these are good questions to ask when considering your living situation. Most rehabs recommend living in a structured living environment, like a sober living, after completing rehab. Sober livings are a great place to transition from rehab.

What is drug rehab like?
Every drug rehab is different, but most follow a standard framework of therapies. Residential inpatient treatment centers are structured and organized in ways to reduce stress and discomfort associated with getting sober.
Mornings
Breakfast comes early and is usually followed up by meetings. Sometimes drug rehab centers have meditation and yoga classes in the morning to help you relax and start the day off right. These morning activities help you develop healthy habits that will translate to post-discharge life. Group therapy is usually scheduled after breakfast. In these group therapy sessions counselors focus on topics related to the treatment process, 12-step program, addiction, recovery and what brought them to abuse drugs in the first place. These group therapy sessions will help you start to recognize patterns of behavior that you can change to avoid drug abuse in the future.
Afternoons are spent usually doing one or all of the following:
-Individual behavior therapy sometimes called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT is extremely effective in addiction recovery because it helps you understand your behavioral responses to specific triggers. Once these triggers are better understood the therapist will guide you toward new, healthier responses to those triggers.
-Group therapy. Group therapy is important because it establishes a sense of camaraderie amongst participants. Hearing other people’s struggles and triumphs help you gain perspective on your struggles.
-Specialized sessions for other problem areas in the individual’s life such as: anger management, stress management, grief counseling etc.

How to treat substance abuse?
Addiction is a very complicated disease that affects brain function and behavior. No single treatment is right for everyone. It’s important that the individual has quick access to treatment and the treatment program addresses all of the patients needs, not just the substance abuse. It’s crucial the individual stays in treatment long enough and understands that the detox process is just the beginning of a complete substance abuse program. Counseling and behavior therapies are the most commonly used forms of substance abuse treatment. Constant monitoring of the individual’s substance intake is important, which is primarily done through regular drug testing. It’s important that substance abuse treatment plans are regularly reviewed and adjusted based on the individual’s needs.

What are the Differences Between Inpatient and Outpatient Programs?
Inpatient treatment requires individuals to check into a controlled environment with 24/7 support and outpatient treatment is a type of therapy that requires the individuals to do group and individual therapy sessions but allows them to return home afterwards.
Most often individuals go through a residential inpatient program before being placed into an outpatient program but that isn’t always the case. Some individuals with less severe addictions can go straight to outpatient therapy.

How to make someone go to rehab? How to make someone go to rehab...

How to make someone go to rehab?
How to make someone go to rehab is a common question among addicts’ families and friends. Families and friends must understand they can’t force someone to get help and go to rehab. The individual needing help must accept they have a problem and agree to seek help. Getting the individual into rehab is much easier once they have admitted they have a problem and that they need help. Getting them to admit they have a problem and need help is the hard part.
Interventions are one of the most effective strategies to get someone to admit they have a problem and need help. In an intervention, family and close friends gather together with the individual needing help and discuss how the individual’s addiction has affected their lives. Addicts are usually in denial and interventions help them realize how their addiction has affected their life and the lives around them. The goal of an intervention is to help the addict realize they need help and get them into an addiction treatment program.
Attend Al-Anon support groups to find out what has worked for other people. Al-Anon support groups are great resources for friends and families of addicts. In Al-Anon meetings families and friends get to hear from other people going through similar situations and learn how they addressed the problem. Good morning friends and family
Do you know what Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is and how it can help you get sober and live a better life?
Cognitive behavioral therapy helps the individual develop better ways of dealing with negative thoughts, and thoughts associated with substance abuse. Cognitive behavioral therapy does this by showing the individual how his emotions and thoughts affect their life. During cognitive behavioral treatment individuals will learn techniques to turn their negative thoughts and emotions into positive ones that they can use to better their lives.

Medicated detox programs are designed to minimize the pain and suffering involved in a traditional detox. Depending on the individual’s situation and substance they’re using a medicated detox could be appropriate.

Currently there are 3 FDA approved long-term treatments for opioid addiction.
Methadone- Used to wean opiate addicts off of heroin. Methadone is effective because it binds and activates receptors similarly to an opiate.
Buprenorphine- Usually used in combination with naloxone aka Suboxone Buprenorphine partly binds and activates the receptors kinda like an opiate.
Naltrexone aka Vivitrol- Vivitrol binds to receptors but does not activate them there for user doesn’t experience high.

Group therapy
Group therapy is normally a few times a week and is designed to provide a safe and structured environment for individuals seeking treatment to talk about their substance abuse problems. Group therapy encourages individuals to talk about what motivates them to abuse substances. By making honest disclosures to the group and listening to other people’s stories and insights individuals will become more self aware and understand that they are not alone in their struggle.
Orange County Recovery Services group therapy is primarily broken up into two groups. One group is a smaller process group and the other is a larger educational/lecture group.
