This talk is intended to help you gain a deeper understanding of the concept of codependency.
There is a lot of misconceptions out there about co-dependency, specifically when it comes to the field of addiction. The root of codependency, the origins if you will, came from the term co-alcoholic at the time it was wives of alcoholics who enabled their husbands and continued letting them drink, give them money to go buy alcohol, and embarrassed of them. They didn’t have the strength to tell them to stop. So, as that continued more and more people started connecting co-dependency with addiction.

Most people who are addicted to substances have jobs and pay taxes. However, getting high on the job, before you come to work, or even after you leave the office can have a severe impact on your career, reputation, and safety. Drug rehabilitation might be your last chance in keeping your job.
76% of substance addicts are actively employed. However, many staff members who have an addiction bypass treatment, as they are worried about losing their jobs. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights claims that 10 to 25% of the workforce in America has shown up for work under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Most staff with a substance issue might attempt to conceal their addiction and keep working, risking damage to their careers even further. Getting help for an addiction to a substance is important for the professional success of an employee, and most often, employers tend to help valued staff with their recovery.

So this talk was actually inspired by a yoga class that I was taking, so in full disclosure that’s where it came from, but my hope is that you will find some value in it and the intention of it is to help you gain a deeper understanding on why I believe that this generation of the millennials, so anybody born 1980 to the year 2000, and I’ll even extend that to the ones born after 2000, are different than and are experiencing the human experience in a way that no other generation before them ever has. So in that class the teacher was talking about how in this fast, rapid, moving world, how important it is to be able to pause, slow down, and to go back to the way things used to be before technology, before all these advances to make our lives faster and faster and faster. And, all of a sudden, something clicked and I started to think of something. I started to think there’s a generation of people that have no idea and have no point of reference to the way things used to be. The way things are right now is the only way they know and the only way it’s ever been.

What is drug addiction? Drug addiction is a serious disease...

What is drug addiction?
Drug addiction is a serious disease characterized by uncontrollable drug seeking and use despite the consequences. The changes in the brain caused by addiction lead to harmful behaviors seen in people who abuse drugs. Drug addiction is also a relapse disease, meaning that sometimes users return to drug use after an attempt to stop.
Addiction begins with the act of taking drugs. Over time, the ability to choose not to do so becomes compromised. Obtaining and using the drug becomes uncontrollable. The compulsive drug-seeking is mostly due to the effects of long-term drug exposure on brain function.

Because prescription painkillers are becoming harder to obtain and the cost is increasing, many people who abuse opiates are turning to heroin as a cheaper and stronger alternative. Nearly half of heroin users began first by abusing prescription opiates. The CDC reports that in the past 10 years heroin abuse has doubled for Americans aged 18-25. 8,200 people died from a heroin overdose in 2013, which is almost four times the amount of overdose deaths in 2002.

Teen OxyContin Use
Teenagers are especially susceptible to OxyContin abuse because the drug is often readily available in one’s own home or the homes of friends. It is common for abuse to begin by taking pills that were legitimately prescribed to someone the user knows. Teens sometimes incorrectly assume that because a doctor prescribed the drug to one person that it is safe for another to consume. This leads to high numbers of teens abusing prescription painkillers like Oxycontin. Here are some numbers regarding adolescent use of prescription opioids according to American Society of Addiction Medicine:
-Each day, 2,500 adolescents abuse prescription opioids for the first time
-1 in 30 high school seniors have abused OxyContin

Oxycontin is the branded formula of oxycodone. It is given to people to manage moderate to severe pain. When used correctly, it is usually safe and effective. When abused, oxycontin can be deadly.
It is estimated that around 2 million people in the United States are addicted to or abuse opioid painkillers like oxycontin, and about 50 painkiller-involved deaths occur every day. Many opioid abusers turn to heroin when they’re unable to get opiod pain killers because heroin provides a similar high, it’s less expensive, and easier to get. One study shows that people addicted to opioid painkillers were 19 times more likely to start abusing heroin in the year prior to the study.
