Drug addiction is also a relapse disease, meaning that sometimes users return to drug use after an attempt to stop.

Nearly half of heroin users began first by abusing prescription opiates. The CDC reports that in the past 10 years heroin abuse has doubled for Americans aged 18-25. 8,200 people died from a heroin overdose in 2013, which is almost four times the amount of overdose deaths in 2002.
